One of the Innsbruck Alpine Trail race´s classic. A 35km run with a proper elevation gain and loss from the lovely mountain town of Grinzens down to the Inn, up to Nordkette and back down to the vibrant mountain city of Innsbruck.
Variable terrain – from running around a forest, to speed hiking up a hiking trail, into a high alpine rocky surrounding. Here you get a mix of speed sections, tough long uphills and a long descent with finishing in Austria´s best mountain city.
The route
Take care of
Energy management. This is one of the longer runs. Make sure you bring enough fuel and don´t waste your energy already in the beginning. It is tempting especially because it´s beginning is a lot of fun. Gentle up and downs. Overall downhill to the valley of the Inn river. Also make sure to schedule water recharge properly. We suggest the following points to fill up your bottles: Kranebitten, Rauschbrunnen, Achselbodenhütte, Höttinger Alm, Hungerburg.
Hint for a good rest point: in the shade of stunning trees shortly after passing Aspachhütte prior heading out to the level passage towards Achselbodenhütte.
As you are running on the south side of a mountain. Make sure to bring enough sunscreen and cover your head.
Scenic points
The passage from Aspachhütte towards Höttinger Alm is a gentle up and down, more or less even path giving you great views of the Inn valley. Surrounded by mountain pines.
Having reached Seegrube you should take a moment to celebrate your achievement. Standing on the top of Innsbruck – one of the alps most incredible sports town.
